On June 4, 1976, Elizabeth Scherer was conceived. On December 14, 2012, Governor Rick Scott appointed Scherer to the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court in Florida, replacing Judge David Krathen.
Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland school shooter, is being sentenced for shooting and murdering 17 people in 2014 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Elizabeth Scherer is the judge presiding over his trial.
Elizabeth spent more than 10 years as a prosecutor before becoming a judge in Florida Circuit. She has also served on the boards of Voices for Children and St. Anthony Catholic Friends for Education.

Anthony Mercer and Elizabeth Scherer got married in 2002. When Anthony Mercer, then a prosecutor with the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, was accused of cocaine trafficking in 2009, Elizabeth immediately filed for divorce.

For the following few years, the couple’s connection was intermittent.

After her split from Mercer, Scherer dated Charles Grady, a police officer with a sketchy record. But in 2005, she reconciled with her ex-husband Anthony.

Anne, Elizabeth’s mother, is a managing partner at Conrad & Scherer and has a law degree from Indiana University. Additionally, she runs Scherer Management as its president and owner. The legal firm also has ties to Elizabeth’s brothers.

Bill Scherer served on the Broward County Judicial Nominating Commission and as Governor Rick Scott’s advisor. When his daughter ran for a position on the bench in 2011, he resigned from the commission.

Elizabeth Anne Scherer, a native Floridian, hails from a well-known Sunshine State family. She is William Scherer Sr. and Anne Scherer’s middle child.

Attorneys with expertise include Elizabeth’s parents, older brother Bill Scherer Jr., and younger brother John Scherer. Bill Sr., the family patriarch, founded and still serves as managing partner of Conrad & Scherer in Florida.

He oversaw the legal team that defended former President George W. Bush in the Broward County recount and has strong political ties to the Republican Party.
