American Haredi rabbi Aaron Schechter, also known as Aharon Moshe Schechter, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 24, 1928, and died there on August 24, 2023.
He is Aaron Moshe Schechter in his complete name. After being accepted as a young boy, he eventually enrolled in Yitzchak Hutner’s class at the Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. He also went to Lakewood Yeshiva to study.
Aaron Schechter served as the rosh yeshiva (dean) of Kollel Gur Aryeh, the post-graduate Talmudical division of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. He sat on the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah presidium of Agudath Israel of America.
Hutner nominated Schechter to positions of authority in the yeshiva before his marriage. He encouraged Schechter to write Avodas Aharon, a rabbinic analysis of a verse from the Mishneh Torah. After Hutner’s demise in 1980, Schechter joined the Nesius of Agudath Israel of America.
Schechter worked closely with two other early Hutner pupils, Yeshiva Ner Yisrael’s Aharon Feldman and Novominsk’s Rebbe Yaakov Perlow, who was named Rosh Agudas Yisroel, on the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah.
